The two major reasons bunions occur are factors due to mechanical stress (e.g.pointed shoes) and family history. Chances are if your mother or grandmothers have bunions, you will develop them as well. Poor footwear also speeds up the deformity.
Bunions occur when a bursa forms over the area or extra bone is laid down (generally over the big toe). This can progress into the big toe beginning to wrap around, under or above the 2nd toes know as hallux valgus. Bunions can be painful and can lead to corns and callus developing.
